If your Christmas lights are wired in series, the power will run through the outlet, on the wire, on the lights and back again to the other side of the outlet. If the series-wired Christmas lights do not light up after you plug it and turned it on, there is a possibility that there is a break on the wiring system along the light set. What you need to do is locate the break and fix it.

In order to know where the break is, you only have to use a circuit tester. Make one tester rod connect with one end of the plug and work your way through each of the bulb plugs by making contact with the other tester rod. If you come to a point that there is no response from the tester, then the wire between that bulb plug and the bulb plug you tested before has a break.

This is one way on how you can trouble shoot Christmas lights. However, this method will only work with Christmas lights that are connected in a series pattern.
